Sodium Chlorite, Cotton Cloth, Canvas, 220 x 475 cm

In this series of paintings a folding technique is employed to create works that refer to the predominantly male territory of the abstract expressionists as well as to the mainly female preserve of crafts. The world of (abstract) painting is a predominantly male territory, while the realm of craft is often related to the female or non-western. The patterns are the effect of a very slow dyeing process: black pieces of fabric are carefully folded as chemicals drain their color. Sometimes for as long as one month, the fabrics are refolded in different directions. The act of painting is in this case reversed, surface is not added but made absent. Movement is, next to the time factor, a key ingredient of this process.
